Support People - stamp by AshPnX Support People - stamp by AshPnX
In conjunction with my Tolerance stamp:

The really long rant is on THAT stamp.
On this stamp I just want to say:

Why do we even classify people? Just say you're a PERSON.
Isn't that what we want? To just be accepted? So why do we HAVE to classify ourselves?
Instead of saying : "I'm a gay Jewish black man" or "I'm a straight Hispanic Buddhist woman", can't they just be people?

It's a rather silly thing, this classification. I have two friends: one was born in Egypt, the other born in South Africa. BOTH were told by the schools and testing systems to mark "Caucasian" rather than "African American" on their SATs and other standardized testing. They both protested, because by definition, they were BOTH African Americans. They were in fact born in Africa. However, neither of them were "black". Thus lies the problems with classification. In the end, it's pointless.

(^ true story that; they both still complain that they probably missed out on some needed scholarships because of it... oh my friends, lol)

The only difference I see is "mean" vs "sweet"... but then I usually want to find out what made them so mean because I don't believe anyone is born mean! :D

Ive travelled alot in the countryside of most of europe and some of africa. Ive met people from all the corners of the earth, got friends in macau, london, canada, brazil, australia, germany and so forth. The thing that i have learned over all other is that people are people. They, for the most part, just want to be polite and want people to be polite to them. We are more similar then we know or, in many sad cases, would want to think.

Agreed. I tried to remind my gender studies professor that everyone was more similar than she tried to claim, and there were more 'differences' within the stereotyped groups than amongst the groups.

Hear, hear. A difficult thing is what you privately classify yourself as vs. how people classify you. (It's sadly inevitable -- it's human nature to categorize everything.) I ran into this problem when I went to college: back at home, I was the darkest-skinned person. My skin isn't very dark, but I am an African-American, but when I went to college (where there is a much wider spectrum of skin tones), everybody - even whites - consider me white. It was really disconcerting and a bit traumatizing in terms of personal identity. I had always considered myself as "X" and suddenly everybody's like, "What? No, you're Y." :hmm:

I went to college with an African American guy who was actually albino. His skin and hair was white, not like Caucasian white, but 'albino white' (I'm sure you understand the difference). But many people didn't comprehend and it was a big problem with the less intelligent of people. Your issue reminded me of that.
Even worse is when you have someone who has parents of two different races. They are always called "swirl" or "zebra" or "oreo" or a thousand other names, and they irritate me... Not that I'm a political correct Nazi (I think PC is part of the problem of classification to be honest), but it's like we're so hell bent on classifying people that folks had to make a NEW classification just for these people...
aaaah, it hurts my brain sometimes :)

I've actually never heard the terms "swirl/zebra/oreo" before. It might be because I'm a small-town gal, and/or because, like I said before, not many people seem to notice I am bi-racial. :yum: It'll be interesting, as interracial marriages proliferate, what will happen to racism.
